Global Runway Experiences

My journey into the world of fashion began with a heartfelt mission to create a junior boys grass dance regalia for my sons for an upcoming powwow in Penticton, BC. Prior to attending fashion school, I worked at the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society for 7 years, where I took on various roles and ultimately served as the events coordinator.

The turning point came during a conversation with Lita the head kitchen staff about attending fashion school in Vancouver. She suggested, "Why go to Vancouver when you can attend the fashion school right here in Kelowna?" This advice led me to the website for the Centre for Arts and Technology's Fashion Design and Merchandising diploma program. After reviewing the course details, I booked a tour and contacted my band's education coordinator to begin the enrollment process for September 2010.

However, my excitement was short-lived. Just a few weeks into fashion school, I was diagnosed with active TB and had to undergo a month-long quarantine at home, taking numerous medications. It was a challenging time, made even more difficult when I learned that the entire college had to be tested for TB because of my case. Despite this embarrassing setback, I knew that resilience is a core strength of Indigenous peoples. I managed to catch up with my studies and continue alongside my peers.

Attending fashion school was far from easy, and there were moments when the workload felt overwhelming. I contemplated dropping out, but I persevered, driven by the desire to set a positive example for my children about the importance of seeing things through to the end. After months of hard work and even extending some projects, I proudly graduated with my peers in 2012, earning my Fashion Design and Merchandising diploma.

Since graduating the Center for Arts & Technology, Fashion Design and Merchandising program I have been on the following runways.
