Aboriginal Community Support Worker-Certificate
Vernon, BC Campus
The 375-hour Aboriginal Community Support Worker Certificate prepared me to support and assist Aboriginal Individuals and families, both on- and off-reserve, to enhance their quality of life. In addition to covering the core training required by all community workers, this program enables me to develop knowledge and direct employment-related skills required to work with the unique needs of Aboriginal people and communities.
This program emphasizes a person/family-centred and holistic approach to community support work and includes a 70-hour practicum at approved organizations. Graduates are prepared to work in entry-level positions under direction and supervision, and practice professionally as part of a support team in community-based organizations that work with Aboriginal and non-people. I completed my 70 hour practicum at The Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society with the Outreach team; my team leader at that time was Ali Butler.

Certified Indigenous Doula April 29th, 2021
The Doulas for Aboriginal Families Grant Program (DAFGP) is offered by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, First Nations Health Authority, and the BC Ministry of Health. The goal of the program is to increase healthy birth outcomes for Indigenous families by removing the cost barrier to accessing doula services.
The Indigenous Doula Training certificate program is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to support Indigenous families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum periods. This program emphasizes culturally safe and responsive care, integrating traditional Indigenous practices with modern doula techniques.
Key components of the program include:
Cultural Competency: Understanding and respecting Indigenous traditions and practices.
Holistic Care: Providing emotional, physical, and informational support to families. Community Engagement: Building strong connections with Indigenous communities to offer tailored support. Practical Skills: Training in essential doula skills such as prenatal care, labor support, and postpartum care.
Participants will engage in both theoretical learning and hands-on practice, ensuring they are well-prepared to serve their communities effectively. The program often includes mentorship from experienced Indigenous doulas and healthcare professionals, fostering a supportive learning environment.
