Jill Setah is not only an International Indigenous fashion designer but also a certified Indigenous Doula and Aboriginal Community Support Worker. Her multifaceted talents and dedication to her community are truly inspiring.
Born in Oliver, BC, Canada, on February 11th, Jill Setah comes from a family with a legacy of resilience. Her parents, Louis August and the late Norah Setah, are Residential School Survivors. Louis August is from the Neskonlith Indian Band in Chase, BC, while Norah Setah hailed from the Yunesit’in Government. Jill, one of six children, has been a registered member of the Yunesit’in Government since birth. This community, also known by its original placename ‘Gex Nats’inilht’ih’, holds historical significance related to rabbit hunting and is part of the Tsilhqot’in Nation in the interior of British Columbia, Canada.
Beyond her work in fashion, Jill is a devoted mother to four beautiful Tsilhqot’in/syilx children. Her deep connection to Indigenous culture is evident through her participation in activities like hunting, salmon fishing, and traditional ceremonies. As a young girl, she danced the pow-wow trail as a jingle dress dancer, cherishing the joy of immersing herself in her heritage. This passion led her to create her son’s first junior boys’ grass dance attire for an upcoming pow-wow in Penticton, BC.
In 2010, Jill took her passion for fashion to the next level by enrolling in The Center for Arts & Technology’s Fashion Design and Merchandising Program. After completing the two-year course, she graduated with a diploma in 2012. Since then, Jill has showcased her designs globally, from New York City and Los Angeles to Paris, Vancouver, and most recently, London, England. Her commitment to Indigenous fashion and her creative talent continue to make waves, bridging cultural heritage with contemporary style.
Jill Setah’s journey exemplifies resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of following one’s passion. Through her work, she not only celebrates Indigenous culture but also inspires others to embrace their heritage through fashion and art.
